Groundwater is now a lot lower than in winter. Within 2m of the surface at the East Dean borehole, and slowly falling a few centimetres each day. Groundwater is expected to continue to affect the ability of the sewage network to operate in West Dean and Charlton, occasionally affecting some basements. Only brief periods of rain are forecast over the coming week and into June 2024. Groundwater is expected to continue to fall, although not fast. Minor flood impacts affecting the sewage network could continue through to the middle of June 2024 in Charlton, and mid July 2024 in West Dean. Long term weather and flood forecasting is extremely difficult. However, if we have an average or drier than average few months, groundwater might fall nearer to normal by August 2024. Groundwater is not expected to rise again until autumn or winter 2024. If you have pumps to help reduce groundwater levels in your property, ensure they are operational. We continue to monitor the levels and forecast. We will re-issue this Flood Alert when new instances of groundwater flooding are thought possible.
